Once reserved for running errands, prayer meetings, and generally dumped at the back of your closet – the humble kurta has made a triumphant return on the fashion scene. The everyday staple is no longer just a behind-the-scenes piece anymore, but is quickly stealing the limelight. Celebrities like Jahnvi Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Sara Ali Khan have been spotted wearing the kurta not only when grabbing a salad, but also to movie premieres, weddings, and festive parties.

The meteoric rise of the kurta can be attributed to the numerous iterations of the garment that have come to the fore. Hemlines, fabrics, silhouettes, and embellishments have received a makeover. The dupatta is dispensable, and gone are the modest salwars and kurtas are being paired with a whole plethora of bottoms. A popular pairing is the kurta and palazzo pants, as seen in Jayanti Reddy and Masaba Gupta's designs. Ankle-length pants, culottes, shararas, ghararas, dhotis, and skirts, there are plenty of options to choose from. The kurta and jacket combination has gained popularity, and front slit kurtas like Ridhi Mehra's are a popular choice for the bridesmaid. Caped kurtas are another hot favourite. Ruffles and pleats add a new dimension to the staple, and Arpita Mehta does just that with her designs. Asymmetrical hemlines are omnipresent, and designers like Astha Narang and Sonaakshi Raaj would have you wear romantic form-fitting off-shoulder kurtas over billowing lehengas and pants. . Pernia Qureshi prefers to play with daring little details like cutouts and bustiers paired with kurtas. Mulmul, on the other hand, takes beautiful pastel kurtas and updates them with interesting trousers. Think tulip pants, flared hems, sheer panels and embroideries.

With the traditional wear wardrobe devoid of any rules, the millennial version of the kurta is just as fitting at a sangeet as it is for a dinner party at home. Amp up the jewellery, play with pastels and jeweled tones alike, and make this look work its charm no matter the occasion.
